People and communities are at
the heart of every decision we make.

Aecon actively shares the benefits and opportunities connected to our industry. Aecon promotes inclusive economic development, partnering with communities and creating new pathways into the construction industry for traditionally underrepresented groups. In everything we do, we’re mindful of our responsibilities to the Truth and Reconciliation process. We seek to work respectfully with Indigenous Rights-holders through joint ventures, community partnerships and other collaborations.

We’re focused on developing processes to minimize waste, GHG emissions, and other environmental impacts. Aecon works closely with clients to meet ambitious standards of environmental performance. Across our projects and operations, we use advanced equipment and carefully developed processes to minimize waste, GHG emissions and other environmental impacts.

Aecon's Reconciliation Action Plan

Our mission:

Respect the unique needs, cultures and rights of Indigenous peoples to foster an inclusive and equitable culture where Indigenous peoples feel supported and enabled to achieve career aspirations;

Recognize the truth of our shared history and the Indigenous lands that we work on through building awareness, developing allyship, and actively listening to the priorities and objectives of Indigenous peoples;

Commit sustainable resources and build collaborative relationships with Indigenous partners to foster positive change and create stronger communities; and

Empower Indigenous peoples to support economic advancement, wealth creation and a sustainable future.

Indigenous Relations

Aecon supports the inclusion, engagement, and participation of Indigenous workers and communities in our projects across Canada. Our overall approach is guided by a formal Indigenous Engagement Strategy, which emphasizes respect, partnership, and mutually beneficial relationships. In 2023, Aecon procured $275 million of Indigenous goods and services.

Most of our projects include an Indigenous Engagement Plan, which outlines how we intend to maximize opportunities for Indigenous workers and for Indigenous businesses to act as subcontractors and suppliers. In addition to our formal joint ventures with Indigenous partners, we strive to cooperate and collaborate with Indigenous communities wherever we work — seeking mutually beneficial relationships across our entire project portfolio.

Safety Always

The Code of Ethics and Business Conduct guides our behaviour related to company business and to ensure that Aecon maintains the standard of a highly ethical and professional public corporation. Safety Always is our top priority. Healthy, engaged teams are critical to every aspect of our success. We aim to:

  • Ensure safe work environments for all our people
  • Promote and demonstrate Aecon's core values
  • Design clear career paths so everyone knows how their career can grow at Aecon
  • Establish clear performance goals and offer meaningful assessment
  • Ensure manager accountability for the development of their teams

We evaluate and report on our success in these areas in our Sustainability Report, including:

Critical risk management: Continuing to roll out our evidence-based “Fatal 8” program. The program includes prevention practices and targeted communications to enhance safety on eight specific operations involving critical risks.

EHS systems: Driving ongoing, systematic improvement in our operational standards related to environment, health and safety, as well as our audit and assurance program and safety-related digital systems.

Leadership, people and culture: Celebrating excellence in safety practices and reporting and continuing to build our safety capabilities through talent development, leadership training and communications.
