Deerfoot Trail Improvements

Calgary, Alberta

The Government of Alberta has moved ahead with essential improvements to Alberta's busiest highway – Deerfoot Trail. The highway enhancements will improve safety and reliability for Calgary’s transportation network for both commuter travel and goods movement.

Since the 1970s, Calgary’s population has doubled while traffic volume continues to increase. Deerfoot Trail is a major north-south freeway that serves more than 180,000 vehicles per day. Improvements are required across the corridor to ensure that current and future traffic volumes are met to improve safety for the travelling public and improve travel times.

Aecon is delivering improvements to the Deerfoot Trail project under four separate contracts.

The awarded contracts involve:

  • The design and construct improvements from Douglasdale Boulevard to north of Glenmore Trail. The scope of work includes constructing additional lanes and seven bridges, as well as the delivery of ramp and interchange improvements in this important transportation corridor.
  • Improvements from Beddington Trail to Airport Trail. The scope of work includes construction of lane widening, a new ramp, and improvements to the Beddington Trail overpass.
  • Improvements from 32 Avenue NE to Beddington Trail. The scope of work includes lane widening and a major reconfiguration of the McKnight Boulevard overpass, which will see a re-alignment of the on/off ramps and construction of a new traffic signal-controlled intersection.
  • Improvements from Memorial Drive to 32 Avenue NE. The scope of work includes construction of lane widening and a reconfiguration of the 16th Avenue NE overpass, which will see a re-alignment of the on/off ramps and adjustments to the traffic signals on 16th Avenue.
