Comox Valley Water Treatment Plant

The Comox Valley Water Treatment Project involves the completion of a new water treatment system that will comply with the Province of British Columbia’s water treatment objectives and guidelines. The project will deliver three main benefits including eliminating the need for turbidity-related boil water notices, removing the risk of viruses and bacteria in drinking water and providing a secure supply of reliable, high quality drinking water for decades to come.

Aecon’s scope of work includes both the design and construction (Design-Build) of the project:

Marine pipeline and intake
Raw water pump station
Raw water transmission main
Water treatment plant
Treated water transmission main

The current Comox Valley Water System provides drinking water to approximately 45,000 residents in Courtenay, Comox and surrounding areas but does not meet provincial guidelines – making this a critical project for surrounding communities.

In September of 2018, Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) also established a partnership with K’ómoks First Nation (KFN) through the signing of a Mutual Benefit Agreement confirming cooperation and collaboration in the management of water resources in the region and support of the project and CVRD’s water license application. Aecon completed the mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and programming portions of the project. The new plant has an increased capacity of 25 per cent and can meet the needs of a population of up to 260,000 people, the anticipated size of Regina by the year 2035.
