Toronto, Ontario – February 21, 2025: Aecon recently marked a significant milestone on Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program and Major Component Replacement (“MCR”) Project, with all eight steam generators now placed into Unit 3.
Aecon is proud to be part of the Steam Generator Replacement Team (“SGRT”) – a 50/50 joint venture between Aecon and SGT (a partnership between Framatome Canada Ltd. and United Canadian Operations Ltd.), who worked collaboratively with Bruce Power to lift the original 100-tonne steam generators out through the facility’s roof and lift the new steam generators into place.
“This milestone demonstrates the performance of our team on the Bruce MCR Project in executing steam generator replacements safely, on-time and with excellent quality,” said Aaron Johnson, Senior Vice President, Nuclear, Aecon Group Inc. “As the construction partner for SGRT, Aecon is playing a key role, creating jobs, generating economic development opportunities and further expanding Ontario’s strong nuclear supply chain.”
SGRT’s full scope of work as part of the steam generator replacement project includes engineering and planning activities, the removal of existing steam generators, the installation of new steam generators, construction management and procurement of materials, and construction activities.
SGRT completed steam generator replacement work on Unit 6, which was reconnected to Ontario’s electricity grid in September 2023. The Unit 3 MCR outage, which began in 2023, remains on track as Bruce Power and its partners look to return the renewed unit to service in 2026.
“This was a huge undertaking that required more than a year-and-a-half of planning just to get to the execution phase, which was delivered safely through a high degree of collaboration,” said Rob Hoare, Vice President, MCR Execution, Bruce Power. “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in supporting this successful outcome, including our partners and the skilled tradespeople who helped make this possible.”
In August 2024, SGRT was awarded a $700 million contract by Bruce Power to replace three additional Units - 5, 7 and 8. Aecon is also currently executing Fuel Channel and Feeder Replacement work on all six of Bruce Power’s units as part of the Shoreline Power Group joint venture.
The Bruce MCR Project will extend the life of the site to 2064. Further information is available on Bruce Power’s website.
